How to Obtain an Insurance License
If youβre interested in working in the insurance industry, many roles require a state-issued insurance license. Common license types include:
- Property & Casualty (P&C): Sell and service homeowners, auto, liability, and commercial insurance.
- Life, Accident & Sickness (LA&S): Sell and service life and health insurance.
Each license type must be obtained separately and in each state where you plan to do business.
Steps to Obtain an Insurance License (Georgia & Alabama)
1. Complete Required Pre-Licensing Education
Take a state-approved course through a provider like GTA (Gatson Training Academy). Topics include:
- Insurance principles
- Ethics
- Risk management
- State-specific insurance laws
2. Study for the Exam
Use your coursework materials and practice tests. Exams are computer-based and cover:

3. Register for Your Insurance Exam

4. Take the Insurance Exam
Bring:
- Two forms of ID

You need a score of 70% or higher to pass.
5. Apply for Your License

6. Complete Background Check & Fingerprinting
